Back-to-School Smile Checklist

It is that time of year again! As summer winds down and back-to-school preparations are in full swing, now is the perfect time to check in on your child’s smile. A healthy smile can help your child feel more confident as they head into a new school year. To help you prepare for the upcoming school year, we created a Back-to-School Smile Checklist with simple steps to support your child’s oral health all year long.

Your Official Back-to-School Smile Checklist

Back-to-School Cleaning & Checkup

From meeting new friends to snapping school photos, your child’s smile will be getting plenty of attention this season. A professional dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar buildup, and gives the teeth a bright, polished look. Routine exams are just as important since they help your child’s dental team identify and treat small issues before they become bigger problems. Scheduling a back-to-school visit helps ensure your child starts the year with a clean and healthy smile.

Create an Oral Hygiene Kit for School

Packing a small dental care kit can help reinforce good habits throughout the day. A travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss picks can be especially helpful after lunch. Children with braces or orthodontic appliances may benefit from orthodontic wax and interdental brushes, as well. Keep the kit in their backpack or locker so they can quickly freshen up whenever needed.

Replace Your Child’s Toothbrush

When was the last time you replaced your child’s toothbrush? If it has been longer than three months since your child’s last toothbrush replacement, now is the perfect time to start fresh. Frayed bristles are less effective at cleaning and may irritate the gums. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush with a child-friendly handle, or consider an electric toothbrush designed for kids for improved plaque removal.

Stock Up on Healthy Snacks

Many packaged snacks marketed to children are high in sugar or starch, which can contribute to tooth decay. Instead, look for tooth-friendly options like cheese, yogurt, crunchy vegetables, fresh fruit, and nuts. If your child packs lunch or eats after-school snacks, offering healthy options helps support better oral and overall health.

Get a Reusable Water Bottle

Water is one of the best tools for supporting oral health throughout the day. It helps rinse away food particles, supports saliva production, and keeps the mouth hydrated. Encourage your child to sip water during class, lunch, and after school. Buying your child a reusable water bottle is a simple yet effective way to implement this habit into their school routine.

Use a Mouthguard for School Sports

If your child plays any contact sports or takes part in physical activities like soccer, football, or basketball, a mouthguard is essential. A properly fitted mouthguard helps protect teeth from injury and can prevent costly dental emergencies. Ask your pediatric dentist about a custom-fit mouthguard for the ultimate comfort and protection.

Give Your Bright Student a Sparkling Smile

By following this simple checklist, you can help set your child up for a successful and healthy school year. A confident smile begins with consistent care and smart choices, both at home and in the classroom. If it is time for a back-to-school dental visit, we are here to help.
